Vena Lee Baird, 75, of Canon City, died Dec. 30, 1998. Born on Oct. 6, 1923, in Pueblo to Melvin Lewis and Mildred (Lenehan) Drain. She graduated from Pueblo Central High School in 1941. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE in 1943 and served until 1945. She was proud of her military service and was a founding member of the Women's War Memorial which opened in Washington, D.C. in 1997. She learned to fly airplanes and obtained her commercial license in 1947. She married her instructor, Earl D. Baird, on Jan. 9, 1947, in Reno, Nev. They lived in Sterling, Colo., where they ran a crop dusting and spraying business together. In 1959, they sold the business and moved to Albuquerque, N.M. In 1961, they moved to Denver where they lived until 1987, when they retired and moved to Canon City.
In the late 1970s, she received an Associates Degree in Library Science from Red Rocks Community College. Vena avidly pursued the study of genealogy, working for decades to prove her family's history to early U.S. Colonial days. She also worked tirelessly for friends who wished to learn about their families and taught many seminars on the subject she was an avid reader of history books and could recite minute details of Thomas Jefferson's life. Vena was an active grandmother to her three grandchildren and maintained a lifelong interest in all aspects of aviation.
She will be missed and remembered by many friends, young and old.
Survived by ... Preceded in death by her parents.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames, the American Genealogical Society, the Silver Wings and a member of the Colorado Aviation Historical Society. Services were held Saturday. Memorials may be made to the Daughters of the American Revolution, General Marion Chapter through the Holt Family Funeral Home, 806 Macon Ave., Canon City.
