Gloom was cast over the town and community Thursday morning by the sudden death of one of our highly respected citizens and retired farmers, Perry Coon. Mr. Coon had been in his usual health and had been working out on his farm east of town tenanted by his son, Jeff, and on Wednesday evening was downtown. Death was due to heart trouble, and being so sudden it was an awful shock to all.
Perry Coon was born in Wisconsin February 6, 1857, and died April 20, 1933, at his home in Otto of heart failure at the age of 76 years, 2 month and 15 days. His childhood days were spent in Wisconsin but when a young man he moved to Indiana where he was united in marriage to Emma Long December 21, 1878.
In the spring of 1891 he and his faithful wife came to Iowa and settled near Correctionville. Since that time their lives have been spent in and around the vicinity of Correctionville, Anthon and Oto. To this union twelve children were born, nine of whom are still living to mourn his loss. One child, Jimmie, died at the age of six months, and the other two, Virgil and Mrs. Margaret Hayworth died in the prime of life. His wife passed away here in Oto in February, 1920.
Those who are left to mourn his sudden departure are one brother, John Coon of Correctionville, two sisters, Mrs. C.O. Ashmore and Mrs. Mary Worthan of Correctionville; nine children, Jeff M. and Aaron of Oto, Albert of Anthon, Ray of Leeds, Mrs. Florence Smith of Cushing, Mrs. Mary Hayworth of Anthon, Mrs. Mabel Beeson of Washta, and Mrs. Jennie Pierce and Mrs. Iva Hayworth of Oto, forty-two grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
In Indiana Mr. Coon was a member of the Dunkard church. He was affiliated with the I.O.O.F. lodge here for more than thirty years. Mr. Coon was always and upright, honest and industrious man, a kind and loving father, and a friend to all in need. His presence will be missed with regrets and his memory will linger long in the hearts of all who knew him.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Willard Bell in the Otto Federated Church Saturday at 2 p.m. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon under the direction of Hudgel Funeral Service of Anthon. The community, with the bereaved ones, mourns Mr. Coon's demise.
