Another home has been made desolate by the death of Thomas Jefferson Coon. Mr. Coon has been a constant sufferer for a number of years. February 27, 1920, Mr. Coon died at his home in Reece, Kansas, and was brought back to his old home for burial in the Bethel Cemetery.
Thomas Jefferson Coon was born in Wisconsin on February 28, 1844. During his residence here he was married to Minerva Carter and about the age of 26-28 they moved to Madison county, near Winterset, Iowa. Later they came to Bethel community, where he was engaged in farming. About fifteen years ago he and his family left this part of the country and went to Kansas and there he had resided since. It was here that about seven years ago his companion and the mother of the children passed on before him. To them were born twelve children, of whom only six survive. There were four girls and eight boys.
Those gone on before are William, John, Frank, Thomas and Edward. Those who survive to mourn the loss of their departed one are Mrs. Francis Clark of Moville, Mrs. J. B. Gentry of Reece, Kansas, Mrs. Katie Dutton of Sac City, Mrs. Nellie Cook of Lanuant, Iowa., Earl and George of Eureka, Kansas. Besides these there are three brothers and two living: W.W., G.W., and J.M. Coon; Mrs. Maggie Summers and Mrs. L.A. Robinson with all the relatives and friends who are grieved at the loss of a loved one and friend.
About ten years ago Mr. Coon underwent an operation from which he never fully recovered. Though never well he was a patient sufferer and it is the witness of his children that he was always a kind and loving father, caring for their welfare. The last analysis of a doctor gave the cause of his death as cancer of the stomach combined with old age.
He died February 27, 1920, at the age of 76 years, having lived in spite of sickness to a grand old age. From Reece, Kansas, where he died, the remains were sent back to his old home in Correctionville to be laid away. May God comfort and bless all who morn their loss. Among the out-of-town relatives who were present at the funeral of Mr. Coon were his brother W.W. Coon of Leeds, Mr. and Mrs. Will Clark and children of Moville, Mrs. J.B. Gentry, Eureka, Kansas. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Deedrick of the C. E. church, at the Bethel church, Monday, March 1st.
