- Some records show that he was born in Fincastle County which did not exist until 1772. Fincastle was created from Botetourt County which had only just formed in 1770. Botetourt was created from Augusta County.
William served under Colonel William Campbell at the Battle of King's Mountain, where his brother Rees was killed. He commanded a company of mounted rangers to protect the frontier. His commission was signed by Governor Patrick Henry. He was also the maternal grandfather of Tennessee Governor William Bowen Campbell.
First Lieutenant in Captain William Russell's company in the campaign against the Shawnee and other Indian tribes in 1774.
