Notes |
- Texas Catholic Historical Society - NICHOLAS JOSEPH CLAYTON AS A CATHOLIC ARCHITECT - Stephen Fox Father Hennessy was closely associated with the Incarnate Word Academy and was instrumental in getting the Sisters of Charity to begin St. Joseph's Infirmary in Houston. He also may have been the medium through which Clayton's firm was commissioned to design a public school building in Houston in 1892. The mayor of Houston, John T. Browne, who was president ex-officio of the Board of School Trustees, was a parishioner of Annunciation and a friend of Father Hennessy's. See Centennial Annunciation Church, 1869-1969 (Houston, 1969), 12. Clayton's office records indicate that he dealt with both Father Martiniere and the superior of the Ursuline Sisters in Dallas during the design and construction of one of the wings of the Ursuline Academy in Dallas. N. J. Clayton "Standard Diary 1887," entries for 29 November and 16 December 1887, and N. J. Clayton "Cashbook 1887-1889," entries for 27 July 1888 and 23 January 1889, both deposited in the Rosenberg Library.
