Thomas Byron Parks, aged 86 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2013 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, [], of the home; sister [] of Burbank, CA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law [] of Winchester, VA; daughter and son-in-law [] of Durham; daughter and son-in-law [] of Raleigh; two grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
Tom Parks was born in Detroit, MI on October 9, 1926 and served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Afterward, he lived in Detroit, Lansing, and New Hudson, MI during 35 years of employment with Honeywell Corporation as a systems engineer and sales representative. Tom and Chris moved to Raleigh after his retirement to be near their daughters.
Tom Parks was a man of varied and intense interests. At one time, he owned a catamaran that he loved to sail on the lakes of Lower Michigan. Later, he and [] were both enthusiastic members of the community theater of Brighton, MI and took great pleasure in acting and singing in musical productions as well as doing backstage work. During his entire life, Tom had a passion for music and learned to play the guitar, dulcimer, and other stringed instruments. Eventually, he taught himself to compose music and spent many hours creating choral and instrumental pieces, which can be found on his personal website Songsforpraise.com. Finally, Tom loved to travel and read. While living in Michigan, he took his family on several long vacation trips and countless shorter ones, many of which were spent camping in state and national parks. Tom loved books of all kinds, especially ones about history, and continued to take pleasure in audio books even after his eyesight began to fail.
Funeral arrangements will be by Mitchell Funeral Home of Raleigh, and details may be found at www.mitchellatrmp.com.
