Notes |
- It's hard to pinpoint Lydia's age. The 1820 census lists a female between 16 and 25 [1795-1804], the 1830 has a female 20-29 [1801-1810] and the 1840 has one 40-49 [1791-1800]. I have to assume that the last one is either incorrect or is someone else. Using the first two, we see that Lydia could be born from 1801-1804. Since there is no one in the household in 1840 in this age range and the younger children are thought to be niece and nephews, it's probable that Lydia died between 1834 when Robert was born and 1837 when the next baby would have been expected.
There is a big question about whether all these children belong to Russell and to which wife they were born. Sidney is 10 on the 1850 census, making Mary only 13 when he was born. I'm pretty sure that, if he is a child of Russell, he is also a child of Lydia. Malissa is 7 on the 1850, making Mary 16 when she was born, it's possible that she is Mary's child but I believe she is Lydia's, who probably died giving birth to her or to the next child. Stephen is 3 on the 1850 census, meaning Mary was 20 when he was born. I have no proof but believe that, if he is a child of Russell, he is also a child of Mary, and she married Russell about 1846.
However, there is reason to believe that Robert, Sidney, Malissa and Stephen are the children of Bryant, Russell's brother.
