Death of Dr. Chambers Recalls Struggle of Early Physician
Death this week claimed a pioneer physician and helped to write a "finis" to an era of medical history that our country will never see again. Dr. D. P. Chambers was one of the last of the old time country doctors.
Dr. D. P. Chambers was born in Dade County Missouri, June 2, 1872. He departed this life in Stilwell, May 6, 1957, aged 84 years, 11 months and 4 days.
Dr. Chambers moved from Missouri to Centerton, Arkansas, when only a small child. He grew to manhood in this Northwest Arkansas community. He studied pre-medicine under an older brother, Dr. R. O. Chambers, of Centerton, Arkansas. He entered Barnes Medical College at St. Louis, Missouri, where he received his medical degree in 1896.
At his graduation he was given special honors by the college for having won the highest grade point average of any student in the history of the college, to that time.
In his senior year of college he was united in marriage to Lemma Ella King of Springtown, Arkansas. To this union five sons and one daughter were born. He is survived by three sons: Wendell Chambers of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Byrl and Paul Chambers of Stilwell. His wife, two sons and a daughter preceeded him in death.
Dr. Chambers came to Stilwell in 1913. He practised {sic} medicine for many years before graded roads came to Adair County.
When he moved to this locality he was the owner of the only car in the county.
However, because of lack of roads, he used his car for only city calls and, sometimes he might venture for a mile or so outside the towns limits. Almost all his calls were made in a horse and buggy.
Often he found it impossible to use even a buggy so that many of his professional visits wede {sic} completed by horse back.
His son recalls that many times his father would ride his horse within two or three miles of a home, tie up his horse to a tree and walk the remaining distance along a foot trail up the mountain. His old saddle bags are a cherished heirloom of the family.
His stack of old unpaid accounts amounting to thousands of dollars, accumulated over a fifty year period, are a monument to his service to his fellow man in their hour of need. His later years were cheered by the many people who would stop him on the streets to express their gratitude to him for having saved their lives.
Dr. Chambers was a member of the Indian Territory Pioneer Association, and one of his favorite stories of early day experiences was his horseback trip alone, across the prairies of Oklahome to make the run for land at the opening of the Cherokee Strip. He staked a claim but the call to medicine was too strong, so he saddled his pony and rode back to Arkansas to enter medical college.
Dr. Chambers was a life long christian {sic} an poined {sic} the Methodist Church at an early age. His philosophy of medicine was that God and medical science work and in and for {sic} the healing of mankind.
